Hi all,

Just for interest...

Does anybody practise No-Gyro Emergency?
I'm interested to know more when the controller vectors the traffic in emergency for land.. If the MRVA is 3000ft and the pilot still haven't the rwy in-sight.. What can the controller do?
Can do an SRA the Approach?

Thanks

It is about 7 years since I controlled at a Royal Air Force terminal unit but we still controlled No Compass, No Gyro (NCNG) approaches, both for SRA and PAR.

At Gutersloh with the Army Air Corps (13 years ago) we used to do NCNG low level QGH approaches to either Visual or PAR.

I am sure someone more current will comment, but I see no reason for NCNG to have been dropped as a skill.

Still do them at Aldergrove.

My unit does NCNG SRAs for TRUCE. In fact we combine NCNG / Speechless or Tx failure / Emergency to SRA, short pattern SRA if necessary. We have no simulator so use a live target instead. Interesting...

Its still a taught procedure on the JATCC, and certainly at RAF Terminal units, is still practised by aircrew on a fairly regular basis.

NCNG to SRA or PAR.... easiest GCA a controller can do! :}

Most RAF pilot training terminal units in the UK practice the procedure a lot. As said, its one of the easier talk downs a controller will ever do.

I have done NCNG SRAs at TDMs unit, for controller training, and as a pilot I find them the easiest SRAs. As a pilot it is much easier to "start turn NOW" and "stop turn NOW" rather than turn left/right five (or whatever) degrees.

Should all SRAs be NCNG?

Should all SRAs be NCNG?

Now there's a good point...
