Another forum has a quote from IFALPA daily news about Virgin starting an operation out of YVR. NGs for domestic and later 777s for Pacific routes.

Can't find any other reference to this rumor. Just wishful thinking then?

...there is no way Air Canada will allow a startup like that. Look at the Emirates situation; desparate to increase YYZ frequency and start YYC/YVR but Air Canada has blocked any increase; even if it meant the eviction out of the UAE of any Canadian Forces flight ops in support of our troops.

Air Canada has no say in the matter, nor does any other airline for that matter. It was the Canadian GOVERNMENT the blocked EK from having daily slots into YYZ, not AC. However, yes the Gov acted in best interest of AC. Job protectionism. As far as another airline starting up in Canada, I could see why AC would object, however I do not see why the government would block a new airline start up.
