After a successful flight test is there any time limit to when you need to apply for grant of the licence other than within the validity of ATPL passes?

Why would you want to wait? One of the most essential requirements is a valid medical certificate, loose that and all your effort is wasted. I know two people who lost their medical before they applied, one was diagnosed with a medical condition, the other had an unfortunate accident; neither was eligible to apply for a licence.

Yes - i thought the same about the 6 months though can't find anything in Lasors. Reason isn't really waiting, there's just no panic and if I decide to go with the IR then can get both issued at the same time (seem to recall CPL has to be issued to get the credit for instrument time on the IR in any case so may be futile). If I lose my medical over the next 12 months, having the chance to fly commercially in the interim is the lesser of my worries and like I say, there's no panic to get it yet (guess that put's me in a minority!!)

Surely the fee is the same whether you submit the CPL and IR together or separate, so why take the risk, submit it now.

Can anyone point me at a legal basis for a 6 month limit (or, indeed, any limit)? Guesses and ill-remembered scuttlebut do not count!

When I did mine, the time limit was 12 months and I haven't heard that it's changed. I passed the CPL skills test but couldn't have the CPL issued because I didn't have the minimum number of hours required and I hadn't done the QXC. Took me 11 months to meet the requirements and in the interim, I did the IR and added it to my PPL.

• For the purpose of licence issue the skill test will

Excellent RTN - couldn't see that for looking! As per last posts, for modular bods it's quite typical to pass the test without the required hours for licence issue so a delay isn't uncommon. Also, there used to be a slight financial advantage to getting both the licence and MEIR endorsements at the same time though I'm fairly sure that has now been removed by the fact that to get the 45hr reduced IR course your CPL actually has to have been issued. If anyone knows differently please correct. Thanks.

Also, there used to be a slight financial advantage to getting both the licence and MEIR endorsements at the same time There has never been an advantage as the CPL and IR have always been two separate fees however; there was an advantage going straight to an ATPL, as the IR is embedded in the licence.

The 12 months stated in LASORs only related to the CPL Skill Test, you could always resit that. JAR-FCL never stipulated a time limit and as Part FCL is mostly a copy, there is no stipulated time limit other than for the theoretical knowledge.

CAP 804: Flight Crew Licensing: Mandatory Requirements, Policy and Guidance

Notifying the UK requirements for pilot licensing and also a guide to the new European Flight Crew Licensing requirements. Effective on 17 September 2012; LASORS will be withdrawn from that date. A5 paper copies are available for pre-order from TSO.
IMPORTANT: The CAA has announced a new date for implementation of European Regulations for flight crew licensing in the UK. Therefore any reference to 1 July 2012 should now read as 17 September 2012.

Has anyone managed to find a definitive answer? We were told by our CFI that the limit was 12 months and I cannot find anything about it in CAP 804 other than the fact that you only have 6 months to complete your skills test...

Then you may have to pay again to requalify; just the job for someone who can't afford to pay for the licence issue, all assuming you haven't lost your medical in the process and if I decide to go with the IR then can get both issued at the same time and lose any credit for holding a CPL! I hope your sums in the air are better than they are on the ground!

Err there was when I went through at the beginning of JAR.

You got the CPL issued with MEP and IR for the cost of just the CPL.

Think it was one class rating and the IR. If you had the FI issued at the same time you had to pay for that seperately along with the night restriction removal.

And unless its changed with EASA all you need to hold was the test cert for the reductions in course lengths. I completed MEP then IR then CPL then FI and got the reduction for the CPL for "holding" the IR and the reduction in pre course requirements for holding the CPL for the FI. Mind you that was years ago and things might change.

Everyone I know got the same.


And its still valid see note one in the table for pro licenses CPL in the scheme of charges.

Includes intial class/type rating and IR if included in the intial application.

And this is also included in the EASA scheme of charges as well as note 1.


And I know someone last year who collected the courses with the pass certs allowing them to step onto the next course without getting the license/rating issued to get the reductions.
