Hi All,
As some of you may be aware, the team at the Jet Age Museum, Gloucester is respraying our Gloster Meteor F8, WH364.
Over the past few months we have been able to spray the silver on the majority of the fuselage/top surface, but thought has turned to the tail and specifically the tailplane colours. The aircraft is currently in and will be kept as the squadron commanders aircraft of 601 Squadron RAuxAF. The dilemma is whether to keep the tailplane in silver as she is, or to go with red/black stripes.
We are short of evidence to go either way. We have one photograph found on the internet of WT722, the original aircraft to wear the scheme, from a review at RAF Odiham but it is not clear on what to do.
So I throw the question over to the knowledge of pprune. Would any of you have photographs that show WT722's tail? Even memories if you are of an age that can remember the early/mid fifties. We are obviously aware of the Corgi Model of the camoflage 601 aircraft and that is swaying us towards the stripes, but we just need that final piece of evidence to concrete our decision.

Many thanks in advance for any help.

Dan

Page 427 of Roger Lindsay's 'Cold War Shield' has two colour images of 601 Squadron Meteor tailplane schemes, including WK722/A in 1953 and WL167/A in 1956. The book also has a comprehensive coverage of the squadron's Meteors.
