Say I am looking to employ an aircrew, where do I start to look?

Do agencies do background/licence/type rating checks, etc.

They'll do anything you want as land as you pay (through the nose). But, assuming you want a King Air 350 crew, they shouldn't be too difficult to get hold of and if these people will be close to you, I'd suggest you do the selection. Which country is the aircraft registered in?

Most agencies are only interested in the money from a one time client.
No one would ask another person to be his reference unless a good reference was a certainty.
If the position is for a small operator, the personality is as much an important point as flying skills.
It is very easy to forge qualifications, as well as experience, (ie log book).

My preferred method is to go thru the normal interview questions, and then pick a few logged flights, and get all the details. did that flight take place, who were the operating crew. if the owner was the passenger, or was it a charter.

If FAA then a copy of the FAA record.

Then I ask his peers, three or four. to get an overview.

Then if required to be based away from home....a short exposure to the culture.

If a TR is required, then sit in on check ride. If TR already in hand, and recent, then ask the TRTO the relevant questions. They have a duty of care, if you ask the right questions, and they mislead you, they might be subject to legal action.
