I should preface this by saying it is not intended as criticism of anyone involved since I wasn't there (also don't know if this is the right forum).
In 40-odd years, latterly as a passenger, I have never had an evacuation incident. I see today there were two (MAN & CLT) resulting in 14 injuries. OK not serious but were they avoidable, IOW when and how do you take the decision to order an evacuation ? Is there perhaps a middle ground, a 'standby to evacuate' if you will, while the situation is evaluated by someone other than (perhaps) a panicked cabin crew.
I remember some serious injuries in the 767 at Gimli as they used the rear chutes which because of the nose gear collapse did not reach the ground.
I appreciate that everyone is a bit edgy in the current climate, but I do wonder if a full-scale evacuation is always the appropriate response.
