View Full Version : An Instrument Rating on a PPL

Hello

I hope that a few of you out there may be able to answer a few questions I have.

Firstly I have a South African PPL and well over a hundred hours total time, how can I convert this to a JAR PPL?

Secondly once I have a JAR PPL can I get an Instrument Rating on that licence? If so how long does a typical ME IR course take and secondly will I find it more difficult given that I have not studied the ATPL subjects?

Finally how much flying must one do to keep an IR current? Can a JAR IR be kept current by flying a/c registered in a non JAA state e.g. South Africa (that assumes the IR is also applied to my SA licence)?

Thanks in advance for your help

Don't know about the conversion to JAR, but for information about a PPL/IR have a look on the PPL/IR Europe (http://www.pplir.org) web site. They have a forum as well (although not as busy) and should be able to help you out.

There is no (legal) minimum requirement to keep a JAR IR current. Once a year it is renewed/revalidated with a suitably authorised examiner.
