Did Allison "invent," or at least pioneer the development of, the single-shaft turbine engine as typified by the T56? Or was this already a familiar concept in the early 1950s?

All of the very early turbojets were single-spool engines.

If we are talking about turbo props, the Rolls Royce Dart was a single shaft engine and that was flying in 1947/48
