View Full Version : 737CL Type rating issue

Hi all,
I recently completed a type rating for 737-300/400/500 and sent all the paperwork to the UK CAA.
When I finally received my new licence I noticed something strange: on the flight crew licence, in table XII 'Ratings to be revalidated' is correctly written 'B737 300-900', but on the 'Certificate of revalidation' I only have 'B737-500 series/IR'.
I called the CAA, since I'm supposed to work on a 300, and asked them about this. They said it is due to their system: since I completed the training on a 737-500 sim (actually it was approved for 300/400/500 and my base training was on the 300) they can only put that on the certificate of revalidation.
To fly the 300 I need a differences course (never heard of it in this case) from the operation and to be endorsed on the logbook, but I don't need to send anything to the UK CAA.
Anyone has info or had the same issue? I'm really confused and at the moment I'm not flying since my company doesn't know how to deal with this, being the first time that they face this issue. It's a JAA company, but not from UK.
Thanks a lot for your help.

Seriously, i dont know why your airline doesnt let you fly.
The difference between the 500 and 300 is basically aircraft lengh and pressurization panel.
Cant they give you a system test about the 300 differences along with a line check?
I am sure the 500 to 300 is not a licensing issue but a company training one.

Exactly, that's what I understood from the CAA lady.
It's something like an operator differences course.
She said 'a captain' has to endorse my logbook for this course.
I am just wondering if anybody else had the same issue in the past and how they coped with that.

cerealkiller,

I think it might be a good idea to talk to the operator you are going to fly for. You only need differences training to fly an NG, the test you have done should be acceptable for 300/400/500. There isn't even a difference in the pressurisation / airconditioning panel between the 300/500, just on the 400 which has an extra cabin zone in the airconditioning and an extra knob.

The same thing happened to me in reverse, when the type rating was issued by the CAA it said 737 300 series, to fly a 500 there was no differences training / testing. At my next IR renewal the TRE signed it as 737 300 - 900 series. This was with a UK operator that didn't even fly NGs, just 300 and 500.

I think the CAA may have got their wires crossed a bit.

Thanks for your reply Excrab.

That's what the operator told me as well, they never heard about differences course for 300/400/500. That's why I am trying to find more info to reassure them on the fact that I can fly the 300 without any problem.
