Dear Aviator Friends,

I've searched the site but couldn't find anything that remotely answered this question (I did find a rant complaining about how elitist golf is in jetblast):

What GA airfields could you recommend for a day out flying including a round of golf ? Ideal locations would be within 200 NM of Brussels, so we're thinking South/East England, Northern France, Western Parts of Germany, the Netherlands, with the airfield being adjacent or almost adjacent to the golf course. Runway length 600m or more with reasonable landing / parking fees. If in the UK, preferably with customs (on request).

I've done some research and came up with Beaune (FR). Fontanals (ES) would be too far away. Any others you can think of ?

Thanks,

PP.

I've never been a great one for cross country Hockey myself, but how about...

Denham Golf Club - CLUB View (http://www.denhamgolfclub.co.uk/)
EGLD Denham Aerodrome (http://www.egld.com/)

Customs, next door to each other, good food on the airfield (can't speak for the golf club). [If you look on the airfield photograph on the aerodrome website, you can see the bunkers!]

I believe Le Touquet has 3 18-hole golf courses.

And doesn't the famous links at Royal Dornoch in Scotland have its own landing strip? Always meant to try that one day.

Rosemarket, Pembrokeshire.
Roserrow, Polzeath.
Hedsor, Wooburn.

All short, no Customs, and probably too far away. Apart from that...

Thanks for the quick reply. I somehow missed the 2008 post, apologies.

Denham, Earls Colne, Le Touquet and Lydd seem the best opportunities.

Wales has some nice ones, but that's just a bit too far out for me.

Dornoch Airfield is operated by The Highland Council, and is alongside the golf course - the Golf Club cut the airfield grass for free. However it is nowhere near the 200 mile radius specified. Hotels are also near though.

I thought you were after an airfield with a golf course nearby for a completely different reason....

One of the most downright "nice" airfields in Britain is Popham:

Popham Airfield Home Page (http://www.popham-airfield.co.uk/)

There is a golf course under the circuit, but not being a golfer I really don't know which one, despite having lived very close by for years. However, a quick google shows 3 golf courses within 4 miles of the airfield and I've no doubt that local taxi firms will be very obliging.

Several near Farnborough; if you can afford to play golf in England you can afford to land there; otherwise Fairoaks is adjacent to Sunningdale, Wentworth, Chobham, Foxhills, Old Woking and many more.

When the landing fee exceeds 10 times the green fee, it becomes a bit caricatural...

Do you know the condition of the strip, is it bumpy?

proudprivate: I can send you Fairoaks landing fees if you wish, they depend on MTOW.
Chobham and Foxhills are about 5 - 10min away by taxi, Wentworth and Sunningdale about 15. There is a brand new course on the NE corner of the airfield but I don't know details of that one or even if it's open yet!

Gloucester (EGBJ) has an 18-hole course just the other side of the aerodrome boundary.

The surface is lovely and smooth but a little bit mossy in places.....A great strip to visit with one of the worlds best golf courses ( according to Tom Watson) and a lovely town with Cathederal only 10 minutes walk away.

L2k two 18s 10 minutes by taxi
Manston - north forland 15 minutes by taxi
Lydd - 10 minutes by taxi
Alderney - for something really different 9 holes 10 minutes by taxi
Earls colne - a short walk
Goodwood - 2 18s a short walk

Of those l2k is very good with customs, manston north foreland a good challenge particularly if a little windy and a british open qualifier, goowood picturesque and splendid customs by request i think or clear at shoreham, oh and lydd is good as well challenging in the wing.

Thanks to all those who responded. Some personal feed back on L2K :

1. Landing fees were, although highish for FR, still reasonable with 25 EUR.
2. Flying there was only marginally more expensive than playing there - we paid 89 EUR per person on a Friday !
3. Spectacular course ("La Mer"), spotlessly maintained by a British greenkeeper who knows what he's doing.
4. Car rental (pre booking required) available at the airport.

possible solution for non-golfing wife and kid(s) : the Boulogne Aquarium is only 20 miles away.

Manston puts you within a short taxi ride of Royal St George's, Prince's, and Royal Cinque Ports. All have hosted the Open Championship at some point in their history, George's is obviously still on the rota and Cinque Ports is the final qualifying venue. I'm biased towards the latter as I'm a member.

Fairoaks puts you a similar distance from my other club, Worplesdon. One of many good courses in the Surrey heathland belt, too many to list and all close enough to Fairoaks. Further west you have North Hants GC which is close to Blackbushe and also a very good course.

Redhill would be a useful arrival point for Walton Heath - a cracking couple of heathland courses which have hosted one Ryder Cup and host US Open qualifying each year. I know a few members if you need an introduction.

Goodwood has a decent golf course as well as an aerodrome and motor racing circuit - I think it is some sort of shrine to expensive hobbies.

RAF Leuchars works well for St Andrews!

I've often wondered who else mixes golf and flying. The best thing about flying is that it makes golf (even at fairly exclusive, private clubs) seem really, really cheap.

What GA airfields could you recommend for a day out flying including a round of golf ? My choices require a stop over!

Woodvale, EGOW, 4 mins taxi to Hillside which is an Open qualy course and has probably the best back nine in the UK and rated 32 in Europe. No Customs.
Hillside Golf Club (http://www.hillside-golfclub.co.uk/)

Llanbedr, EGOD, should open up again late summer 2012, again 4 mins taxi to Harlech (Royal St Davids) Probably best not played on a windy day, unless you are a glutton for punishment! No ATC!! Contact Kemble for landing info.
Home - Royal St Davids Golf Club (http://www.royalstdavids.co.uk/)

Blackpool, EHNH, just a short taxi to St Annes old links or the 2012 Open course at Lytham St Annes.
St Annes Old Links :: St Annes Old Links, Lytham St Annes, Lancashire (http://www.stannesoldlinks.com/)

Cambell Town, EGEC, 2 mins away, Machrihanish Golf Club and also Machrihanish Dunes. NOW we are talking serious golf here, The first hole being recognised as 'the' if not one of the best opening golf holes in the world.
