View Full Version : You Fly Like a Woman

28th Dec 2011, 23:32
I hope no one is offended by my posting my own e-book here ... but the support and laughter of PPRuNe readers had a lot to do with my finally working through my essays and publishing them as a stand-alone book.

Fear of Landing: You Fly Like a Woman eBook: Sylvia Spruck Wrigley: Amazon.co.uk: Kindle Store (http://bit.ly/tGdvCU)

I'm describing it as a tongue-in-cheek memoir. To be honest, it isn't aimed at you all - I tried really hard to make it enjoyable to people without an ounce of aviation interest. But if any of you would like to read it, I'm more than happy to send a complimentary copy to you. Just PM me with your email address and preferred format (mobi, ePub, PDF).

If I got something wrong, just tell me. It wouldn't be the first time.

Guys and gurlz, there is no point in posting here with "Can I have one too please, in ePub format?" because there is no way to send a PDF etc to anybody on p p r u n e . You need to email or PM the author with your email address.

Thanks for that Peter. I do need an email address in order to send you the file. If you can PM me with that and also, let me know if you'd like .mobi for the Kindle, ePub for other readers or PDF, I'll send you a copy.

I'm running a bit behind so if you PM'd me today and haven't received it yet, I haven't forgotten you! I've just been offered a night out at my favorite Japanese noodle bar and I'm afraid PPRuNe just can't compete with that.

Sylvia also sent me a copy and I devoured it in about an hour! So reminiscent of learning to fly back in the 80's when we females were pretty rare in aviation. Always worrying if you were keeping up with the (sometimes quite macho) guys... And even now as a 737 captain I still on occasion get ground staff in some countries talking to the 20something yr old male copilot instead of me - had to laugh about the guy in Almeria who went looking for the real pilot when Sylvia was doing her cross country solo!

I posted a link for the amazon ordering page to my fb page so hopefully some friends will buy a copy!

Thank you Sylvia

for sending me your book ( BTW: epub format displays perfectly on the iPad! )!
Read it in one go yesterday evening on the train. Very entertaining and informative. Like your instructors, I have made the experience that most female students take their training very seriouly and come much better prepared to their lessons than the boys!

Looking forward to reading more about your coming flying adventures in the Saratoga!

Happy New Year, all of you!

I think I've caught up now. If you have PM'd me and not received a copy, then I'm really sorry but can you PM me again with your email address? I can then check if it is one of the ones that bounced (I've had two returns from aol.com addresses) or simply resend. Also, a few people have discovered my email in their spam traps.

I have to clear my PM box (it's 95% full :O) so I'm sorry to ask you to PM again but I'm not sure how else to check.

And thank you all so much for the kind comments. I've always been amazed at how great the PPRuNe community can be but now I'm overwhelmed!

Don't spend the 77p all at once......

I bought the Kindle book but since I had to go through the US website it cost me about 3 euro. That's about one minute of flying time for me, so your book better be captivating for more than a minute!:ok:

akaSylvia
1st Jan 2012, 21:19
3 euros! That's awful. It should be 99 cents plus VAT if your country has it. From Spain, it is $1.19 for me, I think. Not that I would be buying up my own book or anything. :\

Anyway, I'm more than happy to share the book with PPRuNe members. I've learned so much here (ranging from basic flying issues to analysing accident reports to how NOT to approach sensitive subjects) that I'm really glad that for once I can put something back in.

If you want to support my noodle habit, telling a friend about the book is the most helpful thing you can do. But I'm really just crazy-happy that you all are interested and so many of you have enjoyed the read.

Well, it was worth the money anyway.

This is the Amazon page with the $3.44 quoted. I don't know how the arrangement between you and Amazon works, but if this is not the intended price, I suggest you take it up with Amazon:

Thanks Sylvia. Just enjoyed reading (as airfield is currently waterlogged :(). Your comments about reaching Gibraltar reminded me of when I did my IMC rating in a week from Faro, and the cross-country was to Gibraltar ending with a PAR. I criss-crossed Portugal all week without seeing anything - and then one day I took the foggles off to see the Rock as I landed!

Lot to be said for intensive training!

Best regards

Dear Sylvia

Thank you very much. What a super book.

There is only one thing to say - you write like a woman.

By that of course I mean that you are not constrained to write about the technicalities of flying but can include what goes on in your head. Women are good at that blokes are not!

Thank you VERY much. Congratulations.

I don't know if I'll make Sherburn in March but I shall try!

Please note: If your email address includes a reference to eyewitness, could you PM me again please? The mail I sent you bounced and I don't remember your PPRuNe name.

I've had a few reports now that residents of the Netherlands purchasing via Amazon.com get charged an extravagant amount -- is there an exorbitant Dutch tax against e-books or something? I don't get much control - 99 US cents is the minimum price I can set and I get 35% - they then distribute it to the other Amazon shops and add VAT (hence the 77p/84p difference in the UK). The link posted shows as $1.19 to me.

I *still* have not flown into Gibraltar, which was not possible when I did my PPL (you had to file to Africa and then divert to Gibraltar if you wanted to go from Malaga!) but is now. It's on my list of dream locations ... even though it scares me witless to think of landing there with all those pedestrians about and no overrun!

I'm really quite awestruck at the comments, thank you.

Hello Sylvia,
Just wanted to say in "public" that just read your book and its absolutely FANTASTIC! There were many times in your training that ring a few bells with me - especially your PFL training experience as I am going through that at the moment and have some of the same thoughts...

Sylvia, I just got finished reading your book.... non-stop! Very entertaining! I could so relate. When I first started to learn to fly in 1983, I also felt "anti-female in the cockpit" attitudes and heard all the jokes (if God meant for women to fly, the sky would be pink; it's called "cockpit" for a reason, etc. :uhoh: )

It was interesting to read that you are German-American, I am as well, just the other way around. I grew up in San Diego, but I've been living in Germany now for 40 yrs!

I'd love to read it but Amazon only does Kindle versions and I need ePub for my Sony Reader. Seems overly mean to ask for a free version from somebody I don't know .. when I can easily afford to pay .... any ideas where I can buy it for Sony ?

10th Jan 2012, 16:03
Dave, it's a Kindle exclusive so there's no way to purchase the ePub. You have to accept a "review copy" as a gift from me.

Yes - reaching Gibraltar was a bit odd. It's so long ago I don't remember the exact scenario, but having flown from Faro all along Spain, we had to go out over the ocean to escape Spanish airspace before turning into Gibraltar. Quite un-necessary, but then so are many politicians :).

It was interesting that whilst approaching they closed the road across the runway, so the rock was effectively "closed" to anyone except my 172 for a little while. The RAF were running it then, and made us more than welcome. It gave me a taste for PARs too - if ever I can't make a regular approach for any reason, I'd certainly try to find one of these if available nearby. Pity there are less active RAF stations these days.......

This sounds like an excellent read!

Any mention of pink headsets?

Many happy hours at the University Air Squadron teaching girls to fly. If the sortie report said 'Average', they'd always try to do better next time - whereas the boys would simply spend the night in the pub if they were told they were 'Average'!

However, give a girl a simulated engine failure at 1500 ft and she'd usually make a good fist of a PFL. But give her the same failure at 6000 ft and there'd be 4500 ft of "That's a nice field...but so's that. And that one too.... Hmmm, which one shall I use?"

I used to say afterwards that it was like telling them to go into a shoe shop and come out with the first pair that fits, never mind anything else. Not being rude, just slightly teasing and it helped them to understand that any field fitting the 6S criteria would be fine!

Happy times!!

akaSylvia

Kindle App for the PC works really well on Windows - http://www.amazon.co.uk/KindleForPC

Her Indoors might only mind if you don't let her have her own copy? :ooh:

Lots of pink on the cover, no pink headsets though!

But give her the same failure at 6000 ft and there'd be 4500 ft of "That's a nice field...but so's that. And that one too.... Hmmm, which one shall I use?"

Oh, I see you've read my story already!

Nice to know it isn't just me ;)

But give her the same failure at 6000 ft and there'd be 4500 ft of "That's a nice field...but so's that. And that one too.... Hmmm, which one shall I use?"

My wife would be hit by the train steaming down the track - shall I jump to the left ? no, don't like the colour of the grass on that side, shall I jump to the right, no, there's a cow in that field, shall I jump to the left ? right ? left ? Poww !!

Destination Airport closed - shall I divert to A ? don't like the coffeee there, B ? Don't like the colour of the wallpaper in the Ladies toilet there C ? No spare engine D ? Probably have to hold for an approach. E ? Always have to wait for a vacant gate - Silence. What's that sudden silence ?
