Seeing a CRJ-1000 on approach, and flick on its landing lights tonight made me notice - I think - that they were LED lights at the wing root. Due to them being particularly white and flashed on much quicker than on other types.

I was wondering how widespread LEDs are for external lights and if these are options or the norm for recently designed new aircraft types?

It is the way of the future, they require less power.

More expensive to purchase, but cheaper to run over the life of the unit?

Teledyne Alphabeam LED landing lamp (replaces GE4509 in most small aircraft) costs about US $250 but has a 5000hr life and is a direct replacement.
