Just hooligan around at 200ft and 450 ktsWhat? And flight-plan for the climb?

At Newquay International Field, the 'Gallant Forty Twa' would launch from RW 31 with four Speys roaring, then cross the cliffs, descend to 100 ft and shut two down! After five hours sub-hunting, including a magnificent lunch, we would relight the two dormant Speys, climb back into the circuit then debrief in the Scruffs' Bar. Some debriefs lasted longer than the flight!

Very nice LM, thanks:ok: A 57 Sqn K1A (although the a/c came to us on 214 after 57 converted to K2s). Is that a 29 Sqn F3? I assume you're sitting in the other one. Why did they have three XXXs - could never work that out? Somewhere over the Alps I assume - great picture.

Anyone going to take up the Open House?

Lightning Mate
7th Mar 2012, 13:14
Why did they have three XXXs - could never work that out? Somewhere over the Alps I assume - great picture.

It is indeed a 29 Sqn F3 en-route to Cyprus.

The story is that back in the WW1 era, the squadron commander told an erk finisher to paint 29 in Roman numerals on the fuselages of the aircraft.

The painter asked what 29 was in Roman numerals, to which the boss said
"XX1X" - so that's exactly what he painted, two Xs on one side of the roundel and the "oneX" on the other.

Oh come on LM, you were going there in the piccy!

Akrotiri

Thanks for the XXX story - can well believe it.

Herod
7th Mar 2012, 15:31
Told you it was easy. I last went there in 2004, operating a commercial 737 on a military charter. The WRAF controller asked me if I was familiar with Akrotiri. I could truthfully reply "not since 1975", which could well have been before she was born. She didn't seem able to think of a reply to that. I saw the black aircraft that wasn't there in '75, still wasn't there in '04. ;)

Tankertrashnav
8th Mar 2012, 09:19
Regret that on all the numerous visits I made to Akrotiri I never once saw the black aircraft that wasn't there.

Herod
21st Mar 2012, 20:30
Bergen at a guess. (or, if you want one more letter, Bruggen)

NutherA2
21st Mar 2012, 20:48
Brüggen is what I had in mind, H, the floor is yours.

Herod
21st Mar 2012, 22:25
Bedtime, so Open House.

Herod
22nd Mar 2012, 14:29
Bedtime's over. "Hooch aria takes school exam" Airport. To clarify; it's the city and airport, as in London Heathrow or Amsterdam Schiphol.

NutherA2
23rd Mar 2012, 09:38
I don't have a GCE A Level in Airport Names, but it looks a bit like Chicago O'Hare........Nuther OH?

Lightning Mate
23rd Mar 2012, 14:02
I'm busy on the other two threads - go and visit. :)

Herod
23rd Mar 2012, 17:03
You're right Nuther. OH has been declared.

Lightning Mate

Sounds like a wooden pier.

NutherA2
24th Mar 2012, 19:48

McGoonagall
24th Mar 2012, 19:51
Not a Duke, too much ermine.

Herod
24th Mar 2012, 20:20
OK, how's about Beech Baron?

McGoonagall
24th Mar 2012, 20:28

Quote from Pr00ne in "What a waste" thread on Military Aircrew:

When is the RAF going to learn that fast jet aircrew are good at flying fast jets, and piss poor at absolutely anything else?

No good at this stuff..................

Come on LM , don't prove him right. ;)

Anyway, I can't do this one either

Herod
25th Mar 2012, 17:13
Clue time. "Baked goods" think four and twenty blackbirds. American company.

Lightning Mate

25th Mar 2012, 18:01
Piasecki Workhorse ?

Herod
25th Mar 2012, 19:22
"Sub-standard joint" think bodily. "Baked goods" is in the singular; as in a baked ???

NutherA2
25th Mar 2012, 22:14
Piper Pawnee ( as in pie per poor knee?)......OH?

Herod
26th Mar 2012, 00:09

Tankertrashnav
26th Mar 2012, 13:00
Not had much luck doing these recently, so OH my only chance of having a go.

Worn by the parson in the rain, we hear.

Herod

Of course Herod - too easy for a man of your calibre!

Over to you.

Herod
26th Mar 2012, 17:43
Here's an easy one, to get it moving again. "correct advertising leaflet?"

skytrain10
26th Mar 2012, 19:11
Must be the Wright Flyer?

Edit to say closing down now for the night, so if correct, Open House.

Herod
27th Mar 2012, 14:00
Sorry for late reply, was in bed too. Yep, the Wright Flyer it was. Skytrain10 says Open House

Lightning Mate
28th Mar 2012, 09:13

Tankertrashnav

In Hamburg, for example, please expand.

Lightning Mate
28th Mar 2012, 11:04
UK.......?

Tankertrashnav
28th Mar 2012, 11:51
Yes, in the UK.

Lightning Mate
28th Mar 2012, 11:54
I thought it would be mate.

for example

I deduced that was EG, as in UK ICAO designators.

So I ruled out Egginton.

On the other hand, I wonder if its' designator starts with X......

Tankertrashnav
28th Mar 2012, 13:41
Forget about EG - and no idea what its designator is/was!

Lightning Mate
28th Mar 2012, 13:44

Sehr gut, A2!

(In Hamburg, for example, please - bitte, expand - swell)

OH has been offered (for the non-linguists among us!).

Herod
28th Mar 2012, 17:37
I'll take the OH if I may, since I'll be out of it for a while after Friday. "Bird, with hesitation, meets deer" Manufacturer and aircraft.

NutherA2

Hawker Hart, perhaps?

Herod
29th Mar 2012, 12:05
Too easy, wasn't it? Right of course. All yours. I'm going to the woods in Sweden, no TV, no internet, lots of fresh air and exercise.

NutherA2
29th Mar 2012, 18:30
Thanks Herod, have a good holiday; OH

Scottish Aviation Pioneer?

Tankertrashnav
4th Apr 2012, 08:37
Very appropriate given your location , A2. Had one trip up country in Malaya in a Pioneer. The pilot demonstrated what it was like with all the flaps down - like flying in a tunnel. Even the overloaded trucks on the road below were overtaking us!

Over to you.

NutherA2
4th Apr 2012, 13:52
Thanks TTN,

I’d never heard of this aircraft until I came across its name today;it’s a bit convoluted, but devoted anagram solvers might enjoy it:

Manufacturer and Aircraft.

The makers’ riding disaster was solved when they tried using rasher nags.

I am of the opinion that a sorry attempt is being made to keep this going. Like the other one it is stalling and I am closing it. Airfields we have had, aircraft we have and so on.
