TheiC

To help things along:

'Staff' led NutherA2 correctly to 'Pike'; Aubagne is home to the French Foreign Legion, who wear a Kepi. 'Tip' Kepi to get Pike.

Young's Modulus and the Rotational Constant will tidy things up to find a forum favourite; our antipodean correspondents will be pleased.

Threads such as these only maintain an interest if they keep moving.

I regularly set a quiz in an internet chat room (not aviation related). It's tricky judging your audience - make the questions too easy and it becomes a matter of who can type fastest, make them too hard and people get fed up never knowing the answers and don't come back.

I've had a couple of goes setting a clue on here which were obviously too easy (solved in less than an hour each time) but on the other hand this one is now around a fortnight old with no sign of being solved. Might I respectfully suggest we aim for something midway between 'Daily Mirror' and 'Listener' - 'Telegraph' standard perhaps?

Ready to be flamed if it's not what people want.

TheiC
18th Jan 2012, 16:45
TTN, I'd agree with you if this were a difficult challenge... I don't think it is; it should have been very easy to get from 'staff' to 'pike'.

The clue is pretty clear that some fiddling needed to be done with the end of the word.

If you've read my posts you'll know that there is every sign it will be solved very soon indeed, so I'm puzzled by your remark:

on the other hand this one is now around a fortnight old with no sign of being solved

I'm absolutely astonished we haven't had a correct answer yet.

If everyone is fed up and wants to move on, please do: If a new challenge is posted, I'll post the correct answer to this one, with an explanation. Over to you.

NutherA2
18th Jan 2012, 17:45
As you say, Staff to Pike wasn't difficult, once Tip turned out to be a false lead; nor was identifying Aubagne - Foreign Legion - Kepi and re-mixing it to confirm Pike. Was Chopra's dictionary web address (SKEPDIC.COM( also intended to head in this direction?

I'm still at a loss as to where to go for the rest of the clue though; perhaps my little grey cells are becoming tired, but I did finish both the Sunday Telegraph "Enigmatic" and the Observer "AZED" on Sunday. If I don't make a break through soon I'll read your solution with much interest

TheiC
18th Jan 2012, 17:54
NutherA2,

Good to know you're there! You can crack this!

Tip wasn't a false lead. You needed to find which hat someone in Aubagne wears (a Kepi) and then 'tip' it (re-arrange it) for Pike, as you did.

Young's Modulus and the Rotational Constant will tidy things up to find a forum favourite; our antipodean correspondents will be pleased.

Mr Chopra's dictionary was to help you get from stiffness to Young's Modulus and from going around to the rotational constant. His web address is a happy co-incidence which I hadn't spotted.

I reckon you'll have it by the time I've finished dinner, if you are watching the forum. We're having two courses!

Pausing while custard is prepared...

It occurs to me that some players may be having problems because they haven't kept an eye on other threads in this forum of late, and are not aware of the aircraft type. See my response to Herod's attempt above, and ponder Gwyneth's airfield's long-term residents for more help...

Commander in Chief, Authorized, New Approach and many others are confused after losing Eric Morecambe’s partner.

NutherA2

Well done TT, I was beginning to worry that I had overcomplicated the thread to death. As you have deduced:

Authorized (2007 – Frankie Dettori); New Approach (2008 Kevin Manning); Commander in Chief (1993 Kevin Manning) were all DERBY WINNERS.

Eric Morecambe used to address his vertically challenged mate as ERN, so:

DERBYWINNERS losing ERN gives a confused Swinderby.

Tankertrashnav
18th Feb 2012, 14:37
PPRuNe is nothing if not educational. I've been involved with militaria over the last 35 years and I'd never heard of the East of England Regiment. Now I've googled it I know all there is to know (nearly!).

Mind you I'd never heard of the Lake Buccaneer either!

NutherA2

'Fraid not TTN, this one is in England; if you translate Nathaniel Adams Coles and curtail the result, the airfield won't be hard to find (these days it's supposed to be hard to get out of though).

YS

NutherA2
19th Feb 2012, 09:23
Not Lindholme, I'm curious regarding the logic of the various suggestions. Perhaps it's time for more indications:

1. Identify Nathaniel Adams Coles
2. Curtail the result.
3. Put the remainder into the mixer & think APC.

Lightning Mate

& think APC
That might not mean much to some people here mate.

North Coates ?
