Nice to see in these difficult times that Newcastle has a vacancy on their website for an ATCO !!

Nice indeed...and this time only wanting ADI. What's it like working there? Morale, conditions etc? And who are they hoping to attract with a starting salary of 45k? Are they just after student ATCOs as most smaller airports pay at least this. Good news all the same!

Looks like Salary: Starting £37,604 to £45,123. Not bad for aerodrome only, house prices are so much cheaper up north..... tempting to do an aerodrome/APS rating and apply myself :ok:

Things may have changed, but about a year or so ago they were advertising for similar vacancies and it was stated on this site that morale was at an all time low, experienced staff were leaving fasting than rats vacating sinking ships and it was definately not the place it used to be.
In the dim and distant past when I were a nipper, Newcastle was one of the few places outside NATS which was a career option to aspire to but I get the impression that hasn't been the case for many years now.

That said, the salary offered is indeed above the norm for ADI only, the area, depending on where you choose, is affordable and if you play your cards right a sensible applicant could reasonably expect an APP and/or an APS course within a couple of years.
If were ADI only, I'd leap at the opportunity, take everything I could, get the experience and then consider moving on after a few years.

Danscowpie - as you say, that was a year ago - in any case are things that rosey elsewhere? With the hits being taken by the aviation industry worldwide, a lot of people have taken a reality check and are now making the best of what they have. Lot of decent people elsewhere losing/lost their jobs as companies fail/contracts end...

Mind you I can't imagine them taking on anyone they thought would "take everything I could, get the experience and then consider moving on after a few years."

But you're right though - they do still seem to have a policy of continuous career advancement for existing staff. I think at least 2 ADIs in the last year or so, gone on to do APS, and they have always looked to "bring-on" their ATCAs as well. Of course it pays dividends in the long run - low staff turnover - there is a high percentage of NE born and bred ATCOs- no-one considering moving on in a few years...:E

it's good to know that things have settled down and a policy I fully support if they are giving the people who are already there the chance to progress.

Do you know where they send their staff for training? I only ask because someone in the industry told me that they'd signed on with NATS as their main training provider, which seems a very costly and not very efficiant route for a non NATS airport to follow.

It's not just Newcastle who are looking for people with ADV/ADI ratings; checkout Safeskys Ltd (http://www.safeskys.co.uk) they're looking for 2 with ADV/ADI plus an OJTI with APP (or lots of experience in ADV/ADI) as well all at Dunsfold. Things seem to be happening fast there now.

Safeskys are not after students for Dunsfold, they must have ADV/ADI ratings preferably with validated experience and the OJTI must have the ratings with a lot of experience.
