Airport authorities had to close the roads near the airport and support the runway sides with sand to ensure the plane's safe landing.

"Support the runway sides with sand"

"Support the runway sides with sand"

To me it looked like "Support the runway sides with s and"

Language translation oddity?

In any case it looks like a relatively good outcome. A good operational test result from the foam truck too.
