This is a long boring story so I won't bore you with how we got to the question. But, the senario of the argument is. Your flying a 747 classic or a DC10 and the flight is long enough to warrant a "Cruise Pilot" I think it's called or supernumiary pilot.
Anyway I think you have to carry an extra pilot & Flight Engineer. My colleague is insistant that only an extra pilot is required as he can monitor the FE station and then swap into a pilot seat when the FE returns to duty.

So whats the answer and does it differ from country to country.

This is in no way meant to do down the importance of an FE! So don't start on us.

Speaking for the BA 747C:

If one extra f/crew member carried, normally will be a pilot, who will cover all three positions, including FE's.

As sector length increases you may require more members up to and including a whole 'heavy' crew (Capt, FO, FE)

In the airline I work for, the extra pilot also has a FE rating for cruise.

In my airline, we get an extra FE and an extra cruise relief pilot.

Same as Static above Heavy crew requirements are 1 extra pilot who must be LHS qualified and 1 extra FE

Then flight crew limitations are increased to 18 hours
