JAKARTA, Indonesia—A small plane carrying 18 people crashed in western Indonesia on Thursday, officials said, as search-and-rescue teams rushed to the scene. The CASA C-212 was halfway through an hourlong flight between North Sumatra and Aceh provinces when it lost contact with air traffic control, said Bambang Ervan, a spokesman for the Transportation Ministry.
Residents in the village of Bahorok reported that the plane—carrying three crew members and 15 passengers—had crashed, he said.
Rescuers were on their way.
Indonesia, a sprawling archipelagic nation of 240 million people, has been plagued by transportation accidents in recent years, from plane and train crashes to ferry sinkings. Many are blamed on overcrowding and poor safety standards.

How slow is a C-212? One report I read said it was a 90 km flight, and this says it was an hour. Does the Casa really fly that slowly?

At least two mobile phone calls reported from survivors. One from the pilot who spoke to SAR team, but line quality incomprehensible it seems. And one from 27 year-old woman to her mother, in tears and also incomprehensible. Rescue team walking through jungle (estimated six hours) to get to site.

This from Indonesian TV (re pilot) and AFP (re woman.)

Crash: Buana C212 near Kutacane on Sep 29th 2011, wreckage found (http://www.avherald.com/h?article=443b0de7&opt=7680)

In the afternoon of Sep 30th Indonesian Air Force lowered 4 paratroopers to the crash site to get first supplies to the aircraft in case of survivors and prepare a landing spot for helicopters.

The SAR center coordinating the rescue efforts reported the first forces on the ground reported somebody shouting for help and a waving hand. The status of the occupants however is still unclear, the forces were not yet able to reach the victims. Bad weather has prevented further rescue and recovery efforts, the operation is bound to resume on Saturday (Oct 1st).

Aerial images released by Indonesian Air Force show the aircraft on a slope in the midst of dense forest, cockpit and front section with substantial damage, the aircraft doors not opened.
My question:
Why paratroopers?
Why not lowering people on spot by wire ? (helico)
The photo shown in the article suppose it's must be possible
