Can any of you BAW,VIRGIN,American etc Transatlantic (or even Near/Far East, Africa etc) Pilot's out there try and settle an argument that has been raging on another ng regarding who chooses which Airport to use if all the London Airports are fogbound,CWL,MAN,BHX,EMA,NCL are fogbound, and the only ones still open are GLA,PIK &EDI? Is it down to the Crew themselves where to go to or does the company ops people tell you that you have to go to GLA or PIK or EDI? Or do you have a designated alternate from the above 3 before you depart from your origin Airport? And if so what criteria do you take into account before choosing one of the above? MTIA

For a start, fog doesn't affect most long haul planes as most are fitted with CAT3B no decision height autoland, but the issue would be delays in the hold as the traffic backed up. With forecast fog, we'd carry extra fuel for the hold, but prior to burning it, have a word with the company to ask where they'd prefer us to go. Although they have to sort out the mess (pax in wrong place, crews out of hours) the ultimate decision is with the captain (as always).

Furhter to this, does anyone have any pics of the 3 747s that landed @ Teesside in the 1970s (i think) because there was widespread fog, and the only place with a big enough runway to handle these jets was Teesside?

Have always found PIK quite accomodating, quick fueling and turnaround in the fairly recent past.

AYLGR,
You are without any doubt right when you say the final decision rests as always with the commander. But I'm sure you'll need to have a damn good reason when you decide to divert to an airfield different from the one Ops wanted you to go to.
