Hiya,

I was wondering if someone can help me with the following METAR. I am from Europe so not used to this kind of formatt.

KJFK 031751Z 34005KT 10SM FEW140 BKN250 01/M09 A2995 RMK AO2 SLP141 T00061089 10006 21028 56036

I get it as

"JFK weather for the 3rd at 1751Z, surface winds are 340@5kts and the visability is 10 statue miles. Clouds are Few at 14,000ft and Broken at 25,000ft. Temperature is +1C and Dewpoint is -9C. Altimeter is 29.95 inces or M. Remarks are that the weather data was collected at a ASOS station and that Sea Level Pressure is 1014.1mb. The exact Temperature is +00061089C.

However the last 3 groups of numbers is where I get stuck. Does anyone know (in laymen terms) what these numbers mean?

Thanks a lot

Beegnnnmy,

This is my guess. I don't do a lot of flying to North America, but I used the SAS manual to come up with this. See if it makes sense . . .

10006:

The 1 stands for 6 hr max temp. The first 0 indicates "plus". The last 3 digits indicate temp in whole degrees. Therefore, I read this to mean a 6 - hourly max temp. of 6 degrees.

21028:

The 2 stands for 6 hr min temp. The second digit indicates "minus". The last 3 digits indicate temp in tenths of a degree. Therefore, I read this to mean a 6 - hourly min temp. of minus 2.8.

56036:

The 5 stands for 3 - hr pressure tendency. Not sure what the 6 represents. The last 3 digits are the actual variations from the reported pressure (I think!!).

As I say, I don't fly to the US very often, so I could well be wide of the mark with this info. Hope it helps anyway.

WG.

Hi Beegnnnmy,

T00061089....This is a temperature group as indicated by the ‘T’.
It gives the exact temp and dew point to one decimal place using a three figure group preceded by ‘0’ for plus and ‘1’ for minus. Thus 0006 means a temp of plus 00.6C and 1089 means a dew point of minus 08.9C. This is rounded in the main body of the METAR to 01/M09.

10006....1 is an indicator to specify that what follows is a 6 hourly max temp. Using the same format as above, this temp is plus 00.6C

21028....2 indicates a 6 hourly min temp, in this case minus 02.8C.

56036....5 indicates that what follows is the 3 hour pressure tendency. 6 indicates the characteristic of this tendency, in this case falling then steady. Pressure is now lower by 03.6 Hp than 3 hours ago.

Try this link and scroll down to 12.7.2 paras d,e,f and h for the full coding.

Hope this helps.

(Sorry Waste Gate, hadn't refreshed and didn't see your post--essentially the same info)

the ONLY place the United States Government saves paper by abreviations is the weather. Oh well its not too important , is it?

Life is just another sexually transmitted disease.
