My first ever flight and cockpit visit was in a Dan Air BAC-111 in the 1970's so I always feel a little bit of an emotional attachment to them as a type.

Does anyone know roughly how many of the flying noise-generator are still taking to the air?

I know that Eastern Air Charter(?) has a at least one (saw one of those at EGKK a couple of weeks ago) and that DERA flies one as a lab. I've also seen several come up for sale in the press as VIP conversions.

What happened to British World's 1-11s? Is anyone using them on any scale these days?

cheers!

Buddy of mine flies them for EAC in Bournemouth. They still fly 6 for the moment, but I don't think for much longer...

There is a BAC-111 being operated by a large energy company out of Houston Intercontinental Airport.

The way the Spey turns expensive petroleum products into noise, you'd have to be a large petroleum company to afford it. :)
Seriously, I would have loved to have seen the old girl re-engined with Tays. Dee Howard was supposed to have tried to get a STC for the Tay installation, but some say a certain heavy iron exec airframe manufacturer bought him out.

One brokerage site lists 22 in storage - doesn't say where. Same site is offering 26 for sale, all stage 3. There are 23 currently on the US register.

Think there may be a few in Nigeria too.
So a (very) rough guess would be between 20 and 30 flying or flyable.

pigboat,
The BAC 111 cruised at FL 350 with 79 pax and their bags at .72M and burned about 3600 lbs./hr. Or about 455 lbs./h per pax (77 gal/hr. per pax).

The B737-200 (-17A's) cruises at FL 350 with 111 pax and their bags at .72M and burns about 6000 lbs/hr. Or about 550 lbs./hr. (85 gal./hr. per pax).

The BAC 111 had a reputation as being noisy. A certain airport in Florida a number of years ago tried to prevent scheduled BAC service because it was so "noisy". They went to another airport that already had BAC service and put out noise monitors only to find that DC9's, etc. were more "noisy".

I've still got a soft spot for the BAC-111 after a British Caledonian capt. allowed me aged 11 to spend a fair bit of the Schipol-Gatwick flight in the cockpit. Heaven for an aeroplane-mad kid. :)

I think the Royal Air Force of Oman (RAFO) still have their fleet (3?) - mainly shuttling between Seeb, Salalah and the other southern airfields.

Have to admit a hearty dislike for the penetrating crescendo-howl of the 1-11 start sequence; many times in the "Runway Club" (thin-walled accommodation for pilots on detachment to NI, approx 120m from Aldergrove's 08/26) after landing at 0-dark-thirty only to be woken half an hour later by the early departure...

Nationwide of South Africa still fly them domestically on behalf of VS, SN & TP.

You're correct about the Oman Air Force 1-11.Saw one in SHJ a couple of weeks ago.Think it even had a cargo door on it as it appeared to have fuselage strengtheners. Also lots still in Nigeria with Okada and Hold Trade air ? Saw that one in DUB recently with 5N reg (Nigeria ?)

AB's B1-11's were leased from EAF, when the company ceased trading they went back to EAF and believe now sitting at BOH.
