German newspaper reported that a fake controller tried to vector a Germanwing plane. Apparently true as also found here.

Any thoughts on that - pretty worrisome given the fact that radios are easy to get by with..."Turn left right into incoming traffic har har har..."

How do you make sure that the ATC is legit? It never occurred to me that this could be a problem until now...

... because the legit ATC person pipes up pretty quickly to counteract the bogus command. It's happened before around the world, perhaps more often than you think.

All the more reason why a proper read back, including the full clearance or instruction and the full call sign, is so important. Those of you who love to use shortcuts, this means you!

That might work in the boonies, however there are airports that practice the "no readback routine" during peak hours, that means the atco holds xmit down and gabs away and separates commands with "break" or what's known in Europe as "breakbreak" for some reason (vive la différence)
