TRE/IRE question?

Does anyone know of any organisations that conduct Type Rating Examiner and/or Instrument Rating Examiner training courses? Is there such a thing or is it up to the individual airline/operator, to get approval from the CAA based on a pilot's experience, to undertake these responsibilities?

I think you'll find that to be 'appointed' a TRE you will need to be sponsored by an operating company. Normally, a TRTO will conduct the training and the initial test will be carried out by a CAA examiner. There is ground and flight training required. This may be abridged if you hold a flying intructor rating. Some companies may do third party training for other operators.

I've recently used CTC for a 737 TRI rating and am doing the TRE part next month with them. I've found them an excellent organisation with VERY experienced staff.

Did your Airline select you to be sent off to this training centre, or are you self-improving? Was it expensive? What are the minimum requirements to commence this training?

My firm put me up for the Trainer/Examiner position. You can only hold an examiner authority for individual firms but the trainer rating (TRI) is your own and can be used anywhere. The sponsoring firm have to nominate you to the CAA for the TRE. As with everything in this business this whole process costs a fortune.
Before you can take a TRI course you have to do a Core course of instructional skills, then you can take the TRI and finally the TRE. This all costs about £17000 plus extras(sim time, accomodation....).
On top of these costs are the inevitable CAA fees, for example £1156 for the attendence for one day of a CAA Training Inspector at the TRE Standardisation Course.
If you can fund all this (or get your firm to) and manage to pass the whole thing then I'm assured its worth it in the long term.

If after completing a Core course of instructional skills, you then decide to undertake the TRI, is this just a matter of checking all the boxes or is there a written exam and/or a test observed by the CAA after finishing the course.

The Core course is a pre-requisite for taking the TRI, its not type specific. Once youve finished the core course (5 days and a test) you can move on to the TRI. Doing the core course on its own dosnt give you anything except allowance to proceed to a TRI. The TRI (type specific) is a further 8 day course with a test conducted by a CAA authorised examiner. Only holders of a valid TRI can then go on to the TRE Standardisation Course; following this you can then apply for a test for the type you want to examine on.
The core course, TRI and TRE can be done by CAA approved schools; the only test you have with a CAA Training Inspector is during the TRE Standardisation course and then on the actual sim that you will be running as a TRE.
It sounds a long and complex process but if you choose to do it all with one school then they should help you through.
CTC have been first class in running these courses for me as they have ex-CAA and senior airline trainers on the staff. I've now completed the core course and TRI on the 737 and hope to become a TRE quite soon.
