Howdy all !
I spend many happy(??)hours flying to/from Glasgow from Birmingham, London and Manchester as SLF (Self Loading Freight) - mostly British Airways on A319s and 737s. My curiosity has finally got the better of me. I know there's a standard approach via an intersection called LANAK somewhere over the M74, but what are the vectors onto the ILS at GLA RWY 23 from LANAK ? Does it depend on weather ? Some flights come in heading N.W. over Glasgow city and turn sharply S.W. onto the ILS - others seem to head off North towards the Campsie fells and take a longer approach. Can anyone who flies the LANAK approach to RWY 23 give me typical vectors ? All the best for the festive season !

I woould immagine that the "sharp left turn over the city" was infact a visual approach. Standard procedure does head towards the Campsies, then turn left to intercept the ILS near Lennoxtown. From here the approach goes over Bearsden, Clydebank then to the runway. The actual headings flown depend on the winds. They will try to keep the same track, therefore the heading varies with wind. This is of course for runway 23.

Hope that helps.

In addition to Eff Oh's spot on explanation, you may also be vectored for sequencing behind or ahead of other inbound aircraft, or perhaps extended to give more time to allow departures to get airborne.
