View Full Version : Do you ever get bored??

Hello,

Just wondering, if there are any very short haul (regional) pilots out there flying for small airlines such as Aurigny or Scilly Isles Skybus for example if they could just let me know if they ever get bored flying the same old routes day in day out.

For example, Scillonian use a Twin Otter from Scillies to NQY, BRS, EXT, and PLH which ainīt a lot of variety on the roster. If youīre on a BN2 you only buzz back and forth to Lands End all day.

Aurigny use a SH360 from Guernsey to Dinard and Gloucestershire which is even less variety.

Donīt get me wrong, Iīd take the job if it was offered to me tomorrow, but does it ever get on your nerves??

Is it pax or cargo...if pax sounds like a chance to promote tourism and the local area...

My retirement job will be flying C-402's to the islands...if they're still around at that time...

(The C-402's I mean, not the islands...)

Boredom is not the problem, complacency is.
Or maybe boredom is a symptom of complacency.
You do a lot more landings and a lot more often than long-haul pilots.
Maybe they tend to get bored too but in a different way.

Actually I think that this is a valid question and one that I've often wondered.

Like everyone else on this forum I love all things aviation related and despite being a PPL myself I still get a buzz out of strappng into an airliner and excitedly anticipate the thrill of take-off.

But after half an hour or so your backside starts to ache, the view out the window disappears under clouds and you look forward to getting to the other end.

In other words, you just get bored.

I've often wondered whether the guys up front want to just get there and stretch their legs too.......

Well, Iīve been on a few jump seat flights in my time on A320s and one of them was a night flight Luton - Las Palmas - Luton leaving 10pm and getting in at 6am! I wasnīt bored or tired for any of the flight, thereīs always something going on up front and loads of interesting chat. If you are sitting in the back however not knowing whereabouts you are or whatīs going on, boredom soon sets in yeah.

Just, with the lack of variety in destinations for some crews, I was wondering if boredom of flying the same routes all day exists...

Aurigny's shed crews do Jersey-Gatwick-East Mids-Gatwick-Jersey every weekday night carrying mail. Mornings and evenings 7 days a week they back up the Trislanders doing anything up to 12 sectors between Jersey and Guernsey. Occasionally the shed backs up the Saabs on the Guernsey Stansted route in case of unserviceability. In summer they do charters to Manston, Staverton Bournemouth or anywhere else thay are wanted so in some ways the shed crews get the most variety of any fleet.
The Saab fleet does Guernsey to Amsterdam, Stansted, East Mids and Manchester as well as occasional short contract night mails or charters (very infrequently).
The Trislanders do the bulk of the inter-island work as well as Southampton (from Alderney) and Dinard. You can spot a Tri pilot as they wear about 15 layers of clothes at this time of year and spend all their planning time hunting the met charts for where the zero degree isotherm is today! The Trislander is the only company aircraft capable of operating into Alderney.

Perhaps not as dull as I first thought then all this inter-island malarkey in the Channel Islands.

After reading what Whizzy said, I imagine the Shed crews get quite a bit of variety seeming as they do night charters a lot.

Met a few Trislander pilots before and they are always wandering about muttering stuff about weather and load sheets!

I spend the majority of my flying time at and below 50ft agl and in all sorts of unusual attitudes doing my job, and as hard as it is to believe, I get bored. I think if you do the same thing long enough (in my case three and a half thousand hours) it all just looses its magic.
I quite look forward to doing a bit of multi charter flying every now and then, just for something differant.
dont get me wrong.....I still love flying, just sometimes the same job is as boring as bat 5hit and a change, no matter how boring in its own right, is a life saver.
