I was landing on a flight from LA and to my horror, parts of the cover came apart as the enging went into reverse thrust....Is this part of the braking system?? It was a kind of elongated action...The engine casing seem to get longer...Any explanations??

No worries, JJ
Just a normal reverser sleeve deploying.

I always thought the 737-200 did a wonderful job if disassemly on selection of reverse.

There are several ways of getting reverse thrust but all mean redirecting that air flow forwards so bits move around. A bucket reverser comes out and off the back to close down and form a sort of v-shape behind the outlet. Some engines cowlings slide back and internal deflectors push air out sideways and fowards etc.
