I have a King Air type rating on my UK CPL/IR. If I want to fly a TBM 700 on the N-Reg (in controlled airspace) can I do it on my Uk license? I read ANO 21 and can't make sense of it - can anyone help?

Hopefully you will get a more detailed reply from someone with the books and refs to hand which I haven't, but I have checked it out in the past because I regularly fly N reg singles & twins over here. However, it's the FAA rules that give you the authority. Basically you can fly an N aircraft in the UK if you are qualified to do it on your UK PPL and remain in UK airspace. I believe you will not be able to use your IR or commercial privileges unless you sit the appropriate written exams for the FAA IR and apply to obtain a US Licence. The nearest FAA office to do this I believe is in Frankfurt or Heidelburg and the charges are such that I decided to wait until the next time I'm in the States and visit a local FAA office. In the meantime I will continue to fly 'N's using my UK PPL.. .Sorry I can't be more detailed away from home and hope this helps a little.. . <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="smile.gif" />

Hector Pascal, this is exactly the law almost everywhere. VFR operation under PPL conditions inside the country of the CAA responsible for the pilot's licence.
