Does anyone have a definitive list of UK airlines that have come and gone since about 1950? (that's a date, not a time - before some wise guy pops up!)

There's a book - "British Independent Airlines 1946-1976", which is very comprehensive, but of course doesn't include the last 25 years; I don't have a copy, but if anyone's interested, it is currently available - I have the publisher's details.
Good for a nostalgia overload, 360 photos!!!

I've had a look at that book too. Some interesting airlines are included. I can't think of a book which lists what's happened since then, but here are a few names I can think of that have come and gone in the more recent past:

Air Europe
Air Ecosse
Ambassador
BCal
Capital Airlines
Community Express
DanAir
Debonair
EuroDirect
EuroScot
Princess Air
Regional Airlines

I'm sure there are others - who have I missed off the list?

Birmingham Exec didn't go bust, just changed their name to Birmingahm European, then temporarily merged with Brymon to become Brymon European, then demerged and bought out completely by Maersk under which they still trade as a BA franchise.

:( PERIGRINE AIRWAYS :( - a great bunch of guys, many of whom are still around.
And, I'll mention it again as it's very close to my wallet - EASTERN AIRWAYS, who were, as has been correctly summised, Lease Air, Eastern Airways and then Genair before they went tits up. :p

In all of the above I missed

BAF
BEA
BOAC

The first was British Air Ferries, which dates me a bit Bristol 170's and Carvairs (Guppy DC4's) if I remember rightly.

The other 2 can't be that IMPORTANT - you could look at it as a name change to protect the guilty.

----------------------------------------------------
ups there goes another one! who was that then ?

NIGHT FLYER, I believe TransMeridian, is still operation in the states, as far as I can remember, it went into chapter 11 alright, but came out again, its parent airline Translift/TransAer, although Irish, is now history,

Chiglet,
An "anorak", moi? ;-)

EI-EI-O,
I assume "Transmeridian" was meant as in Trans-Meridian (London), later Transmeridian Air Cargo, later British Cargo Airlines, who became another statistic. Had an off-shoot called TAC Heavylift, who continue as HC Airlines.

A few more for the pot:
Westair International Airways
Virgin Sun (only just history)
Venture Airways
Transglobe Airways
Tradewinds Airways
Tempair International Airlines
Tal-Air
Spacegrand
Skyways International / Coach Air
Skyways Cargo Airline
Sky Trek
Skyrover
Site Aviation
