Hi,

I flew into Tenerife on Tuesday evening with Thomson from Bournemouth. I purchased 400 ciggies on the flight and stupidly left them under the seat when I left.

I was sat in the last row and was the last passenger to leave the aircraft which was due to return to Bournemouth 2 hours later.

An hour after I left the aircraft I realised I'd left them and called the Thomson helpline who said they'd call the airport at Tenerife and get the aircraft checked.

A day later I find that they have found nothing.

I always get my crew to check the cabin for left baggage before I leave the aircraft so I'm a little surprised that they weren't found. I trust my crew to be honest and not to steal left passenger baggage. I'm not sure in this case wether cleaners were admitted on board and whether they would have stolen them but even so I'm somewhat dismayed that someone in the chain has acted dishonesty.

I wonder if this is rife in the industry ?

If a large bag was missed being found under the seat on checking the aircraft by the crew, and assumingthat the bag was taken by a passenger on the return flight, I would say this represents a potentially dangerous security breach. Thoughts ?

400 free ciggies??? Just sell them on the flight back and a nice tidy profit. You were daft enough to leave them, I wouldn't call the crew DISHONEST, just human. Imagine the hassle required to try and find the owner........... Sorry, I know it makes me look bad, I have history of being daft and handing 'found' money in, but I couldn't and wouldn't call the crew thieves.

JTO, so in your book it's "human" and "not dishonest" to appropriate someone lost property (ie steal it) and then sell it illegally for personal gain in blatant contravention of the responsibilities of your employment? The mind boggles!

If poor aceofblades harboured illusions that crew were intrinsically honest you've gone and blown it for him - How can you possibly defend someone who steals and embezzles and then claim they're not a thief? Jeez, you're a wee bit messed up, aren't you?:ugh::ugh::ugh:

You're nuts - give it up before it kills you... then worry about other things.

Well, here's more proof that you are are not safe anywhere. Even in the UK. The current security system, like most others in Europe guarantees absolutely nothing. Yup, there certainly are thieves working airside and in the UK each and every one with an airside pass granted on the data provided by the marvellous, infallible, totally trustworthy and absolutely reliable Disclosure Scotland organisation. Thieves, terrorists, social misfits, peodos, psychos who cares? - as long as they have no previous. This is the same system that can be relied upon to have ticked every single box but to never understood what they were meant to have done in the first place. ...but whatever is was, they did they did it correctly. Fingers in ears... BANG!

I can only assume that the crew conducted the check, and determined that the unclaimed plastic bag, was not a safety risk. Regardless of the Government health warning.
I also assume that there would be no turn around cleaning staff onto the aircraft.

Thus I assume that the security procedures in force are well up to standard.

If you paid by CC cancel the transaction, the goods were certainly not up to the standard required.

This is gods way of telling yo to give up.

I work as a dispatcher at a major UK airport. In the last week I alone have handed to me by cabin crew:

400 cigarettes (off a flight from GCI), four paperbacks, two expensive mobile phones, and 250 euros in cash. All have been entered in our Lost Property Book, and been locked away. Other countries may have different (or more likely non-existent) systems, perhaps because it's all too much trouble. We have enough to do without taking care of other peoples' thoughtlessness, but still we are honest enough to account for what we are given.

The rather moralising tone with regard to the OP's smoking habits are a little strange, but this is the holier-than-thou PPRuNE I suppose.

I didn't say what I thought was right, personally I would (and have) handed 'lost' property in. I believe that if it were a bag or a wallet, there would have been a much better chance of getting it back. 400 giggies?? They probably thought 'idiot' and kept them without a second thought. If you boarded a plane and found a £20 note down the side of the seat......... what would YOU do?? The vast majority would pocket it. If you found a wallet with cards and personal items?? You might just hand it in. Sorry, human nature, people wouldn't see that as stealing, even if it is if you go by the book. So no, I'm not messed up, just a realist.

They can think what they will but it is theft.

Yes, it is still theft.

jayteeto There is a word in the English language (and I am sure in virtually all languages)........ MORALITY. Doing the right thing, a few us still try to live our lives that way.

Many moons ago flew out to Lesbos from Manchester and left an item of hand bagage on the aircraft. Confidently expected to retreive it when I returned through Manchester two weeks later. Never saw it again, often wonder what happened to it.

Did you check with the handling agent in Lesbos?

All our lost property is offloaded where it is discovered, it would seem highly unlikely for it to have been transported back to Manchester?

I KNOW it is theft!! My missus is a police officer. I have said, I would hand it in, I HAVE done in the past. What I am saying is: MORALITY does not exist in the majority of the population. I guarantee that if you did a survey, 90% of people would say that they would do the right thing. If you then did a 'hidden camera' practical test on an aircraft, that figure would change dramatically. Where I live now, people would think you were an idiot if you handed the ciggies in, thats a fact, a sad fact, but thats how things are now. People see politicians swindling thousands, drug dealers in flash cars, stabbings and muggings going unsolved, gun crime out of control (and it is), they see that crime pays. WHO CARES about 400 ciggies???
The moral brigade can repeat the above posts picking apart my views, fair dos, but you all need to get real. Society has changed (for the worse), live with it, because there is NOTHING you can do about it using the current rules. Now, if you decided to put me in charge........... :ooh:

PS. A few of us try to live that way? Yadder Yadder. Don't lecture me on morality, I play things like this by the book, I am talking about real life society. Talk to 10 year olds like that  They would still ignore you ........
