License revalidation and new validity date

A question I can not immediately find a clear answer to:

As from how many days prior to the expiration date of a license can one take a check ride (or sim check) if one wants to retain the original date of validity as basis of the new validity date, rather than the date of the check ride?

You list your location as Belgium, so I'm assuming you're talking about a JAR license?

In which case, I also assume you're talking about a rating, not a license, since there is no check-ride needed to revalidate a license.

If it really is a JAR rating that you're talking about, then the answer is 3 months.

JAR–FCL 1.245 Type and class ratings –
Validity, revalidation and
renewal
(See Appendices 1 to 3 to
JAR–FCL 1.240)
(a) Type ratings and multi-engine class
ratings, aeroplane – Validity. Type ratings and
multi-engine class ratings for aeroplanes are
valid for one year from the date of issue, or the
date of expiry if revalidated within the validity
period.
(b) Type ratings and multi-engine class
ratings, aeroplane – Revalidation. For
revalidation of type ratings and multi-engine
class ratings, aeroplane, the applicant shall
complete:
(1) a proficiency check in accordance
with Appendix 1 to JAR–FCL 1.240 in the
relevant type or class of aeroplane within the
three months immediately preceding the
expiry date of the rating.............
