Been looking for some landing lights, but wonder if they are available to the public, or only aviation personnel. Are there different kinds, and how much voltage do they use? I was thinking of putting them on a truck that I plan on buying for off road use, but I'm afraid they will use too much juice. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

Erik.

Available in both 14 and 28 volt DC methinks. For the $ you are better off with 1 millionCP (12v) spotlights available mail order. 20$ vs. at least 250$ should be an easy decision. Good luck.

747 landing lights are 28v AC (600watts)... Airplane voltage of 115Vac/400hz is converted to this voltage with transformers.

Due to the high temperatures they generate, I would not recommend for long periods without some sort of cooling.

One of the microlight manufacturers fit some small landing light that bear a remarkable resemblance to some I've seen in Halfords.

On the other hand, try a good aerojumble - Popham do several a year but there's usually a list of what's going on in Flyer.

I think you should look for a offroad vehicule store or a store that specializes in lights accessories for cars or trucks

And just like Petergozinya says it is alot cheaper!

Landing lights and taxi/ turn off lights are available 28v 600w down to 100w. Note that they are enormously expensive and short lived by auto standards. Good try but forget it for your off roader I suggest.

avoman is right - operating life of most landing light bulbs is about 20 hours. Without the cooling effect of airflow as well, that's a lot shorter.
