I read somewhere that there was a plan to park her on the Thames - use as a floating museum and heliport.

They normally state the condition of the vessel upon sale... Anyone know what's its seaworthy state? Does it come ready to sail with working everything or is it a hulk?

It will need a sail as the engines are not included:uhoh:

Mmm. . . gives a displacement of 19,000 tonnes and an estimated metal weight of 10,000 tonnes - what's the rest of it made of?

Also on that site, Lightning T5, no engines, full history - presumably one careful owner!

Arc Royal... French boat? :}
Not French - it just can't travel in straight lines.

topgas,

You should ask one of our naval experts, like mm43 or broadreach, but part of the answer might be:
non-metal structure/fittings (!) + fuel + stores + ammunition + crew + Harriers + helicopters (etc).

Think "Displacement" means the max amount of water the ship can displace, which equates to the maximum all-up weight (equivalent to an aircraft's maximum taxi weight).

Arc Royal? Dommage!

Took the Beeb a while to catch on...... should have come on here and found out last week :}

BBC News - Carrier HMS Ark Royal put up for auction on MoD website (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-12883511)

Must of heard all the kerfuffle on here about the spelling of Arc...Ark, as they appear to have heeded the spelling polices warnings....:p

Mon dieu!-

I hope someone will remove the golden rivet before she is sold. If you need a clue it used to be in 3T13, but it is only accessible when the 10p piece/cabin-door interface lock is on! Also I would like the Captain's chair from the bridge for old times sake;)

I wouldnt mind owning the painting of the previous Ark Royal that hung in the Admirals reception area. Depicted entering Valetta (Malta) harbour IIRC and with real aircraft on the decks.

Can't help with the painting but here is a photo of Ark Royal leaving Malta in November 1978 with rather a lot of real aircraft on deck.;)

If that was painted during her first commission then below decks was Pere Artist's 1923 Rolls Royce 20 :}
