Hello

There has been much discussion on this site about pilots who work as contractors rather than full employees, especially for a well-known Irish carrier. The employment law issues have been discussed at length in other threads. I'm interested in the safety implications, if any.

So I wondered:

1) what is the impact of working as a contractor on your flight time limitations? Who is responsible for ensuring these pilots fly legally? Them, their agency, or the airline?

2) do these pilots fly as both captains and first officers?

3) How do airlines that use contractor pilots roster their duties? I imagine that it's fairly straightforward to keep track of the rosters and FTLs of employees. Is it as simple with contractors?

4) If you are a contractor pilot, is there a restriction on flying for more than one airline at one time? I imagine this could cause problems with knowledge/adherence to specific company SOPs etc.

Thanks for your help.
