Anybody familiar with the work of Rodney Stich, an ex-airline captain (1950s and '60s) who became an FAA safety inspector and, ultimately, whistleblower? author "Unfriendly Skies: 20th and 21st Century Airline Disasters" as well as a number of other books? He apparently was rewarded for his serious concerns with a year in prison, among other things...had it out particularly for UAL.

it is pretty amazing. He and I have been e-mailing back and forth, and I'm going to be calling and talking to him. He was a PBY pilot in WWII--started as a radioman--and I'm working on a PBY cover story for Aviation History magazine.

that is cool. United airlines was really sorta screwy during the jet transition.
