IDG's...they function very well, unless....you run 'em out of oil, then they function very bad(ly).:hmm:

Henry - I don't think so. I think that is an IDAG

IDG for Integrated Dive Generator? Works fine too :)

You'd certainly find all the infos you're looking for by googling the right signification (dRive). Basically it is a mechanical device coupled between the engine and the electric generator so you're always providing on 400hz, no matter the engine's rpm.

Last A/C like A380 Have a variable frequency generator on each engine instead of IDG.

Look up BAC1-11, then look up IDG.

Got some time and found this book which explain the principle :

Aircraft electrical and electronic ... - Google Livres (http://books.google.fr/books?id=74amDes2TE8C&lpg=PA107&ots=k8dqxQhiD-&dq=constant%20speed%20generator%20integrated%20drive%20gener ator&pg=PA107#v=onepage&q=constant%20speed%20generator%20integrated%20drive%20genera tor&f=false)

Tks AFStar!! that was helpful...actually googled it and was not happy with the links that i got..needed this plain and simple language explanation..

Preparing for my interview and electrics is not something that 'excites'!!

De Facto...very helpful observation indeed :hmm:

Integrated Drive Generator or Internal Drive Generator, ((I forget)).

They (the IDGs, there are two - one on each engine) maintain a constant speed of the Genny(s) - even though the engine speed varies throughout the flight.

Yes, like most things that whirr and have mechanical parts, if it were to run out of oil things would get dry and hot. . .

One can disconnect the IDGs in the A320 but they cannot be re-connected except by MX on the ground.

Ok?

Also, the IDGs are cooled by fuel from the fuel tanks. . .

. . .the fuel - thus having cooled the IDG, is then fed to the fuel tanks to heat the fuel as Jet A will freeze at -40*C

Ok?

Read your post zlato.
Its not even a question but a fact without any magic word in it....
