Flight Engineers, wonderful people (Chief FE told me I had to say that!!), but seriously, invaluble crew members. Yes, our incapacitation checklist says that FO would carry out essential switching on FE's panel, then resume his/her seat for letdown, approach & landing.

When I was a 727 plumber with Pan Am, the captain was the back-up. He also has a better view of the FE panel from his seat.
