View Full Version : Charter Flying - Is it really THAT bad???

Yes, I know that this debate has raged before... I have a friend in the UK who is considering which path to take - charter or scheduled flying (he is currently a Captain on the Barbie jet and has 4,000+ hours including 1,000 PIC on the Barbie).

I have heard all of the standard charter-related complaints:
a. too much night flying
b. continuous duty and little rest time
c. lower pay than many scheduled airlines
d. others...

On the other side of the coin, I have heard some positives:
a. Nice aircraft (e.g. A320/30, B757)
b. Tropical destinations with interesting scenary - nicer than Hamburg during the winter (sorry to my German friends)
c. Great overnights for longhaul

A few years back I was fortunate enough to fly on a Britannia 757 to Tennerife and the pilots claimed that they thoroughly enjoyed their jobs and wouldn't consider flying scheduled. They actually looked happy.

What's your take on the choice (if you had it)? Is charter flying really as negative as some would have us believe? What are some of the POSITIVES in your mind? My friend will be very appreciative for the info.

Cheers and happy flying!
