Does any one know what gas is used to inflate the evacuation slides? I thought it was CO2 but it seems it is Nitrogen.

Many thanks in advance for your answers to ..."inflate" my intelligence.

It is a kind of gas generator mixing chemicals. It is not compressed gas in a bottle...
Can't find my training manuals but this link might help :

Contrary to the previous post it, is normally Nitrogen gas from a bottle using an aspirator (think that's what it is called) which draws outside air to increase the gas being supplied.
The link in the previous post does explain it, unlike no-hoper comments did.

Sorry,my first post was a little confusing. The system includes CO2 and Nitrogen !
These gases are used to cool but they are not the primary inflating material.

Ok, so here is probably a stupid question...but if a plane crashes and is on fire...would the gases in these inflatable slides not explode thus worsening the situation?

... It is not compressed gas in a bottle...

The "Gas-Generator Module" belongs to the A380.

But compressed gas in a bottle is common and usual.
I checked the AMM from A320, A300, A310, A330, A340, B737 Fam, B747 Fam (incl.-800), B757, B767, B777, MD11.
They all use also only compressed gas (without "Gas-Generator Module").

I am not sure about the system in the B787.

I am no expert here, but my understanding is that the compressed gas or whatever is only a part of what goes into the slide. The compressed gas sets up sort of a siphon that sucks outside air into the slide to fill it. I was told that during evacuation training, but have never seen it is a manual.

I seem to recall reading that Airbus developed this inflation system for the A380 in order to meet the required deployment time for the slides. Using only compressed gas only, as is the norm, the upper deck slides in particular could not be inflated rapidly enough.
