the companies that do end of life aircraft do they buy the whole aircraft or do they charge the airline or lease company etc to do the recycling and then do the airlines etc want the usable bits like engines and avionics back ?

Generally, the whole aircraft is sold, to the party that will part it out.
Big business, these days.
