Just heard that a manufacturer gained approval for a lower cargo lobe modular crew rest for the Boeing 767 .Is it in service with any airline? Where is it located? How can you access it? Stairs? Ladder? Snaking around LD-2's? What about the safety aspects? Personal experience? And last but not least: how is life down there? :O

Q. used them for many years on the B747-338s. Access was via the fwd galley through a trapdoor in the floor. There was another escape door which I think exited into an aisle.The container was loaded via the cargo compartment and the entire crew rest was built inside a double width container.They were loaded ex BKK and SIN for European trips and included aircon adjustments, lighting and fire detection/alarm.The fire alarm was part of the aircraft fire warning system with an annunciator and warning on the F/Deck.
Later when they were not needed due to the B747-400s taking those routes, they were used for engineering spares and workshop on Hajj charters.This allowed a full set of manuals, spares, tools and a bunk to be carried and secured on the ground during down time.
They were reasonably popular with the CC as they had full bunks which were a lot better than the previous chairs.
