More than 100 firefighters were dispatched Sunday to John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens awaiting the arrival of a plane that is said to be on fire, according to the fire department.
The fire department received a call shortly after 5 p.m. that an airborne plane was on fire. "Right now the plane is in the air and it appears like it might be dumping fuel before it lands," said a spokesman for the Fire Department.
In response to the reports, 25 fire units and 106 members were dispatched the airport.
"We are there on standby waiting for it to land," said the Fire Department spokesman. "Unclear if it’s the engine or a wing."
The spokesman said he did not know when the plane was likely to land. And officials were unsure how serious the situation was.

Strange thread title. Nobody has said there's a wing on fire, nobody even knows whether there -is- a fire... Calm down, at least for now.

Aircraft has landed safely, a Delta 767 en route to Moscow, 200 aboard.

Good to know plane safely landed. Now we can trash the initial press reports.

Title of this thread probably reflected the initial AP report (where Fox probably got their report):

Plane coming to NY airport has possible wing fire (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20101121/ap_on_bi_ge/us_jfk_plane_emergency)

AP – 8 mins ago
NEW YORK - A fire official says emergency crews are waiting for a plane at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport after reports of flames spewing from one of the aircraft's wings.

"The pilot was extremely calm as he approached the airport, according to a live feed from the air traffic control tower."

What else would they expect? :ugh:

What else would they expect?

You missed the entire UPS Down in Dubai thread, didn't you.

The flight crew are supposed to have parachutes and leap out of the plane at the first sign of danger; then let the fire supression system do the work.

I thought this was the best part of the report !

The plane can fly with just one engine but it was told to abort the nine-hour flight to Russia

ya know:

During World War 2, there was a very nice song: "coming in on a wing and a prayer"

the words included things like: with our faith in the lord and our full crew aboard, we're coming in on a wing and prayer.

Usually this meant that an engine was on fire or had failed. phrases like this, and my favorite: TARMAC have become part of the lexicon of the uninformed press.

so, they landed safely and that's good, the firefighters had a nice drill, and we should all concentrate on better mx.

Tower controller who handled flight saw flame followed by smoke come out of engine shortly after take off. Speculates that it was bird and / or compressor stall. (sounds similar to thomson)

ho hum, moving on.

The fun begins at just before 29 minutes into this tower recording:

http://archive-server.liveatc.net/kjfk/KJFK-Twr-Nov-21-2010-2130Z.mp3

They ask for 'straight out' just like in the simulator. A couple of JetBlue crews report seeing a flash, one says it was about 300 feet AGL and suggests they sweep the runway for FOD.

They continue with Departure 30 seconds into this clip:

The track log of the flight is here:

Don't know if this was a GE engine but Shore Guy had a timely query about B-763 engine flameouts earlier today:

Congratulations to all the pros who got the plane back on ground safely!

It now turns out, according to the NYTimes, that there was no fire at all (other than the possible cstall seen by the tower on takeoff).

Apparently it was N1200K .

Can anyone confirm that it indeed has PW engines instead of the CF6's?

The Boeing 767 crew reported they had lost the left hand engine (PW4060), climbed to 5000 feet, dumped fuel and returned for a safe landing on runway 04L about 50 minutes after departure.

From the excellent work at The Aviation Herald.

From the New York Daily News article -

The jet, which can fly on one engine, was loaded with 60,000 tons of fuel for the nine-hour flight to Russia.

60,000 tons of fuel :D

We now know it's true intention, it wasn't flying to Russia, it was off to the moon!

"News Flash! Newspaper gets it wrong! Stop the presses!"

If you mean the New York Times, they apparently were just about the only ones to get it right.

It is in the HuffPost (JFK Emergency Landing: Delta Flight 30 Suffers Engine Failure (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/11/21/jfk-emergency-landing-delta_n_786588.html)).

Thought I'd drop in to get the real scoop... no thread.

Updates from those in the know appreciated.

with 60K tons of fuel they could have made it around the world single engine and depressurised -but it does seem above the runway limits :}
