On the internet presence of famous german newspaper "Sueddeutsche Zeitung" an article speculates about RR already having known about problems with their Trent900 engines:

"The A380 of Lufthansa have been flying with new engines for some time - different to the aircraft of the competitors. Had engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce therefore already known about problems before the Qantas accident?

The weaknesses of the A380 engines might have possibly been known at RR long before the fire on an aircraft of australian airlines Qantas. Only this can explain that the Lufthansa A380 delivered this year already have engines of the type Trent 900 in an improved version, while Singapore Airlines and Qantas now have to change their engines. Possibly RR had known about the problems, but underestimated the grave consequences. Presently it is unclear if and how customers were informed.

The british corporation did not want to comment on the procedings when queried.

... (explanation of the Qantas engine problem in detail)

According to LH, 15 of the 16 engines on their 4 A380 already have the modified component. Only on the first aircraft which was delivered in may this year one engine has to be changed.

Another item indicates that the problem has been known within the company for a while:
RR had started to take back engines from endproduction line, to run them on aircraft already delivered to customers.

Airbus gets the engines quite early within the production process, as the jets have to be flown to Hamburg for fitting of the interior. But there the aircraft are on the ground for several months and theoretically do not need their engines. RR wants to take advantage of this now, to satisfy the worst needs of it's customers. But it is obviously unclear if RR can deliver fast enough for Airbus not to fall behind schedule with delivery deadlines..."

Now if this were true and RR waited to see how long they would get away with a known problem - unthinkable.

Any speculation on this in the "anglo-press"?
