IFR or VFR?

Hi all,

Wondered if anyone knew whether a 737 base check should go down as VFR or IFR in the log book. Is it still under IFR even though you're effectively flying VFR throughout?

If it's VFR then it's VFR, if it's IFR then it's IFR. It has (almost) nothing to do with the weather conditions and how you are maneouvering, it has to do with the services recieved from air traffic control and weather minimums.

On a CAVOK, sunny day, you can do a series of visual takeoffs and visual approaches/landings on an IFR clearance, then it's IFR in the logbook. You could go out in marginal VMC weather at night and look at your instruments thoughout, and stay VFR - then it's VFR in the logbook.

Not in the UK - you can not fly VFR at night.

If its IFR, its IFR.

Don't confuse VFR with VMC.


One is the rules you are flying to, the other is the conditions(weather) you are flying in.
