Colombian CAA told one airline that got their first Q400 not too long ago and that had experience with the whole Dash 8 Series that due to the changes in avionics it couldn't be the same TR. But they went "awww, come on, we have been flying the Dash 8 for 15 years!" and the CAA replied "OK, then any pilot who will fly the Q400 needs to have at least 500 hours on the "other" Dash 8s, then said pilot will do a short "differences" course (how do you call that in English BTW?), a couple of sim sessions and then they can fly all the types".

End of story.

Completely legal.

And pretty much exactly the position in EASA-land. THIS (http://easa.europa.eu/certification/flight-standards/doc/oeb-general/List_of_Aeroplanes_class_and_TR_and_endorsement_list.pdf) is the EASA list of type ratings - look at the dehavilland section (page 4) - as mentioned above, all 4 dash-8/Qseries types have the "DHC8" endorsement. But note that (D) in column 3.

Now consult the implementation procedure (http://easa.europa.eu/certification/flight-standards/doc/oeb-general/ImplementationProcedures_ITsystem2711.pdf)...

16.2.3
(a) the symbol (D) in column 3 indicates that differences training is required when moving between variants or other types of aircraft which are separated by the use of a line, in column 2

the 100, 200 and 300 are in the same box in column 2. There's then a line, and the 400 series. So, same endorsement, but differences course between 400 series and any other series.

About 8 years ago I flew the 200, 300 and 400 all in the same day for a UK operator who had all 3 back then.

It's legal, but not clever !!
