T5 is go (maybe)

There are widespread reports this morning that the government will give the go ahead to Terminal 5 today - I guess that suposes that the hapless Byers can get the Railtrack monkey off his back for long enough to make a statement.
Mind you, there are also mutterings about a cap on the total number of flights that will be allowed at EGLL as a sop to the NIMBYS. This supports what I was told by la Kong when I interviewed her last week but I guess we'll see later today (at last).

I heard that as well Mr Rimmer,we get the aircraft going over but to be honest you get used to it, although Concorde can be a bit of a ****** when it drowns out the TV just at the crucial moment when they reveal who did it!!!! :D :D

Be interesting to see how they are going to prove they need it for increased air traffic now that all the airlines are laying off people left, right and centre...

Julian, it will be many years before T5 is operational. Do you really belive that the airline world will be in decline for that long? Aviation would be in a dire state if the planners took such short term views.

I agree with you binary and maybe should have worded my mail a bit differently! What I was trying to see was that the anti-T5 camp will probably use this as an argument.

Any ideas who is going to operate from T5. Are BA going to move from T4 or are the Star Alliance airlines going to relocate so as they are flying from the same terminal, and reduce transfer times?

Ya mean years don't you fokker? The Heathrow express has a a T5 tunnel and station I understand come to that, have you ever wondered why it takes so long for the tube to get from T4 to the central area?

I believe the intention is that there will be an examination/review of air traffic needs in the south east over the next few months (i.e. the review will be over the next few months!) and this will be followed by a decision on new runway capacity.

Frankly, I think any talk of one runway sufficing is pure and utter garbage; I would be very surprised also if the planned review does not lead to an announcement for a third runway at Heathrow. As Sir Humphrey would say, never allow a public enquiry unless you're sure in advance what its findings will be . . .

Sooner or later, R3 will go ahead, it's really a matter of finding the right time for the announcement. New planning procedures, arising from the T5 debacle will also cut down on the length of the enquiry, so it's not impossible that R3 could be in operation shortly after T5, or by the end of the decade.

Despite all the bad vibes and announcements of airline job losses, EGLL is running only about 2% down on the same time last year. Gatwick is the place to watch, having lost so many flights that have moved to Heathrow, it's traffic is maybe 15% down.
Heathrow not only needs a 5th terminal, by the time it has been built, say 2007-8 the demand will probably be there for another runway ... but where !!! :cool:

3rd runway rumoured to be between A4 and M4. It need not be a full one - a short one for commuter type traffic, with their own terminal, connected via an (underground?) train link... i.e no actual taxiway link. After all CDG is almost 2 airports...

Of course, Northolt could be used... but their NIMBYs would jump up and down as well...

As a sop to the NIMBYS, aircraft movement increases have been capped at 5% :eek: :eek: - so I guess Marcel Hardcel and his colleagues in Toulouse will be rubbing their hands in glee over all the A380 orders that will be needed.

Of course, what will happen is that all the short haul flights will disappear ... except who then will feed the long hauls?
