Yesterday the weather in part of the UK was very poor visibility below about 2500ft. We landed at an airfield with a/g radio which is published as "not always manned". OK so one has to be careful. On departure just after calling blind that we were lining up for an immediate departure on runway XX an aircraft appeared out of the gloom on very short finals. It was spotted just in time but what amazes me is that at no time were any radio calls made (except after landing when a call was made to make room in the hanger!!)
What is wrong with standard calls, let everyone know where you are and your intentions PLEASE

I totally agree.

Better one call too many, than one too less.

As I recall from my (limited) experience in the US, it is common practice to call blind, as most of the airfields are unmanned.
