View Full Version : Islands with airstrips

Last weekend we (2x R44 and 1x plane) flew down to Beaune LFGF (south of Dijon) to visit Chateau Savigny and the 80+ fighters, helicopters, 200+ motorbikes, 30+ racing cars, fire engines, tractors and some 3000+ model planes etc. Oh, and some pretty special wine... :ok:

A great destination for a flying-themed weekend (the helicopters landed at the chateau). PM me if you want the email of the owner.

So, where next?

It would be great if there is an island somewhere, grass strip, small hotel, beach and that's it. Ideally not as far north as Scotland, or as far south as the Bahamas!

Perhaps somewhere around Normandy? Dutch/German coast?

Smaller the strip and island the better!

Look forward to hearing some suggestions!

Fly safe,
Sam.

Try Ameland, EHAL

It is one of the Frysian Islands on the northern coast of Holland.
Texel is perhaps more well known, but Ameland (http://www.ameland.nl/index.php?simaction=content&mediumid=1&pagid=314&fontsize=12) is far more interesting and ticks all the boxes you have indicated.
It has a grass strip of 800 meters. Literally 5 minutes walking to the nearest pub/hotel (http://www.hotelnobel.nl)and it is virtually on the beach.

Or you could go into the slightly bigger hotel (http://http://www.hotelamelanderkaap.nl/?LANGUAGE=EN) that`s almost on the airport itself.

O, and there`s a golfcourse too, if that`s your thing.

Aran Islands

Hard runway - and parking sometime could be an issue.

Aran Islands Galway Ireland Welcome to the Aran Islands (http://www.aranislands.ie/)

The craic is good...but don't drink too much of the black stuff though!!!

EHTX and EHAL have been mentioned, but most of the German islands, all the way up to the Denmark coast, have airfields too.

And, of course, there's Helgoland, if it's not too foggy. Helgoland is actually two islands quite a way from the German mainland, with the smallest island actually being the airport.

I can recommend Helgoland north of Bremerhaven, Germany (a nice airport there too),

And, if you're much more adventurous, Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland. It's magnificently beautiful. The walk to town is easy, you can hike up the volcano, and visit "Pompei of the North", where excavations of the 1973 eruption are underway.

You don't even need to leave Southern UK. :ok:

For helicopters, try Burgh Island (http://www.burghisland.com/) off the S Devon coast.

Your fixed wing mate can land at Bolt Head strip about 5 miles East.

It's a bit random, but I've also found Flat Holm island for the rotary - the original idea was to land the plane at the Weston Super Mare Helicopter museum; but I get the impression that the airfield is closed?

Safe flights, Sam.

Walney Island - South Lake District

Tiree - Lovely island to visit

Texel - and watch the parachuting

As mentioned previously Arran Islands - three islands each with an airstrip - my favourite is Inisheer, the smallest one

Sam,

Arran Islands are great (fond memories).

But if you want a loooong weekend, hot sun, good food and sparkling sea, consider Elba (LIRJ). Runway 16 approach is fun, even more if departing 34 ;)

From memory 600m of Tarmac and Heli's. No fuel though (you get it from Lands End).
