I want to buy a GPS to use in a hired PA38, but would appreciate advice from anyone who's done it before as to which one and where to put it. GPSIII Pilot and Skymap II are current favouties, but not sure where to mount them. I don't really fancy the column mounted option as I'm not sure it would fit a PA38 column without being intrusive and concerned that the visor mount would be too near the compass. Any tips?

When ever I use my GPS III, is place it on my knee board. Dosn't get in my way either.

I think that Pooleys do a kneeboard with a clip designed to take a GPSIII. That might solve your problem.

Similarly, the Skymap II comes with a leg strap.

See also http://www.anywheremap.com/ - more than a GPS (a little pricey though).
