Any ATC JOBS

Hi

1st posting on here but I was wondering if anyone knew of any ATC jobs around at the moment . I have ADI, ADV AND APP and also just done a year teaching. Applied for Southend, Carlisle and Guernsey but seems like you need Radar to get anywhere these days

If anybody can help then that would really help

Nothing new, I'm afraid. Precisely that situation prevailed when I was looking for a job in 1971! I eventually found a non-radar job but got into "The Ministry (now NATS)" ASAP.

The Carlisle job didn't require radar and the Southend advert did state that training towards APS may be given to a suitable candidate, although I know that there were a number of applicants who were fully rated so perhaps it was filled by one of them.
You say you've been teaching for the last year, is that as an ATC Instructoror schools/colleges?

What have you done about finding a job? How many airports have you visited and how many ATC General Managers have you sold yourself to?
Have you enquired with NATS about direct entry?

The problem is that you appear to have had the requisite qualifications but you don't tell us what you've done to make the best of them.
In the last 18 months there have been at least 10 jobs that I know of (not all were advertised nationally) and I think you would have at least got an interview for, at least 7 of them would have carried the opportunity for training for the APS rating.

You are correct, not having the APS does make getting a job a bit harder but the world won't come to you.
Find out the name of the GMATS of every non NATS airport and write to them with your best CV, follow that up with a telephone call asking to visit the unit and to have an informal chat with the GMATS.

Guys, how do you manage to have both ADI and APS ratings?

With my employer, it's virtually impossible now. Once you step on an areodrome path, you will end up with ADI rating only (sometimes together with APP, depending on location). Same applies to TC and area. In the past there was a possibility to move from aerodrome to TC, but this idea has been abandoned. There is a bunch of people that got retrained for radar and despite working full time TC, they still manage to keep their ADI ratings, but there's not many of them.

So, why would an aerodrome controller have an APS rating and, last but not least, why would future employer request ADI+APS? You're working partly aerodrome and partly TC then, or what?

I'm curious, because in such case it appears that I have quite limited possibilites to move to another country and employer - I have no possibility to get trained and to validate APS.

If you go through NATS and you take the aerodrome course you will tend to do both the ADI and APS ratings, the exception for this is if after the ADI course you go to a London airport (where the approach is done at Swanwick).
If you then go on to do the APS rating you could either be posted to a regional airport (any other NATS aerodrome, which also has approach on site) or Swanwick.
As for other employers asking for both, it is likely that they would want both so could train you almost as soon as you join and don't need to pay for your course (an APS course at Hurn is about 10 weeks long!)

I asked the HR Dept. at Southend what the outcome was but all I got was an automated answer :ooh:

You could try HIAL. Their ATSUs at Benbecula, Dundee*, Kirkwall, Stornoway and Wick are combined ADI/APP. *Dundee is a subsidiary of HIAL.
