I'm having trouble working from a deviation card to find out a compass heading - so i'm wondering if someone could put me out of my misery and show me how they work it out!. .. .The question is:. .. .For N(360) Steer 003. .HDG (T) 012ºT. .Varn. 8ºW. .HDG (M) 020ºM. .HDG (C) ?. .. .i make it 023ºC but the book says 022ºC am i stupid?!. .. .thanks for the help...

I reckon you are right. The books (particularly the confuser)often have mistakes in them. Irony is I don't think I've ever met someone who actually bothers with the compass deviation as its usually so small and navigation is not such a precise skill. There have probably shown my stupidity and will get shot down in flames for this post!

The question is missing some information that may have allowed you to arrive at the 'correct' answer - they have not told you what to Steer for East (090). . .. .Depending on what the heading to steer for East may have been, a correct answer could well have been 022.. .. .ExiledTyke is also correct - the Confuser does have some wrong answers in it, as well as some incomplete ones. ET is also correct that compass deviation tends to be ignored as it is insignificant when viewed against the accuracy of most Private Pilot's flying.

Agree with the other answers. Except that I think most compass deviation cards would show a value for 045 degrees, which would be even more relevant in this example than the 090 degrees which tacpot mentioned - the desired Hdg(M) would then be roughly half way between two headings on the deviation card, so you should average the two deviation readings.. .. .Although, to tell the truth, it's so long since I've looked at a compass deviation card, I might be talking crap!. .. .FFF. .-----------. . . . [ 21 March 2002, 10:01: Message edited by: FlyingForFun ]

Jet-mouse - I'm with you. Always managed to get differing answers to books. Even the exam papers had errors in them!! . .. .IN my case my CFI once pointed out to me - in the real world, if you can fly within +/- 3 degrees in an R22 that's shaking the fillings out of your back teeth, your doing well. . .. .Good luck with the rest of your maths.
